Frst Kathy,

Thanks for the info regarding the Mormons and Mary and Jesus. I want to learn more.

We know now that there was a long process whereby early Christians began to connect to the discipline of chastity, for both men and women. At first the connection was related to an expectation of the Second Coming and the end of the world - no need to marry since the end is nigh. Later on, when it began to be understood that the end was not imminent, other reasons persuading Christians to take up the life of celibacy began to surface. Much of this had to do with the experience of leaders and their teaching and interpretations given to Scriptural passages.

Today, we are gaining a better perspective on how attitudes toward the body and sexuality developed but the process of un-doing these attitudes will be lengthy. Afterall, this is our heritage.

I think conversation about whether Mary Magdalene and Jesus were married (just contemplating the idea) is helpful to us today. Imagining the possibility helps release some of our internalized history that challenges the sacrednesss of our bodies. Conversation around the topic helps peel off our skewed attitudes (whether held consciously or unconsciously) that sexual desire is sinful. It is a step toward greater health.

I was raised a Mormon, and the Mormon church teaches that Mary and Jesus were married. Informed Mormons are currently very much enjoying all the "discoveries"--as can be imagined.
